The Ondo State Government is considering the introduction of a 13th-month salary for civil servants, a policy move that has immediately triggered optimism among workers across the Niger Delta—particularly in Delta State, where civil servants are expressing hope that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori will approve the first ever 13th-month bonus in the state.
Sources in Akure confirmed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has ordered an internal review on the financial feasibility of the proposal, with discussions already taking place among senior government officials. A top government aide disclosed that the governor is “keen on rewarding workers for their hard work throughout the year, despite economic challenges.”
A Bold Labour-Friendly Gesture
The proposed bonus is expected to form part of a broader strategy aimed at boosting productivity, improving labour relations, and lifting the morale of the state’s workforce. Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) across Ondo State may benefit from the scheme if approved.
Although no official announcement has been made, the development has generated excitement among civil servants, many of whom describe the initiative as timely relief against inflation and rising living costs.
Labour unions have also welcomed the move, urging the government to fast-track implementation once consultations are complete.
Delta Workers Look Forward With High Expectations
The news from Ondo has sparked conversations in Delta State, where civil servants are expressing renewed hopes that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori will take a similar step by approving a 13th-month salary for the first time in the history of the state.
Across union platforms and social spaces, Delta workers have praised Governor Oborevwori’s developmental achievements, citing road infrastructure, urban renewal efforts, and youth empowerment programs as proof of a governor who “puts people first.”
A senior labour official in Asaba noted:
“Ondo is moving towards a 13th-month bonus, and we believe our governor in Delta will not forget us. We appreciate his developmental strides, and we hope he will make history by approving the first ever 13th-month salary for Delta workers.”
Analysts say if both states implement the bonus, it could set a new welfare benchmark for governments across the Niger Delta and beyond.
Awaiting Final Decision
The Ondo State Government is expected to announce its final position after reviewing recommendations from the Ministry of Finance and relevant labour stakeholders. If approved, the policy would mark a major milestone in public sector welfare reforms as the year ends.
For now, civil servants in Akure and Asaba are watching closely—hopeful that December may bring not only celebration, but financial appreciation.
