The people of Tudun Yola in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State woke up on Friday to an atmosphere heavy with dread and unanswered questions. What began as an ordinary Thursday afternoon turned into a horror that now grips an entire community — an attack so calculated, so heartless, and so shrouded in mystery that even seasoned investigators are shaken.
Two women — senior and junior wives in the same household — were burnt alive in their separate rooms after unknown assailants slipped quietly into their home, waited for hours, and launched an attack that bore all the marks of premeditated evil.
A Community Frozen in Fear
According to multiple accounts, the neighbourhood had been unusually quiet that afternoon. Their husband was away, and the serenity of the compound offered no hint that death had already crossed its threshold. It was only after sundown, after the Maghrib prayer, that confusion began to stir.
The Kano State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who described the attack as “gruesome” but deliberately withheld deeper details, insisting that divulging too much could jeopardise the ongoing investigation.
Kiyawa revealed that two mobile phones belonging to the suspected attackers were recovered at the scene — a discovery that has given investigators a firm starting point.
“What We Saw Was Not Fire — It Was Horror.”
For Anas Sha’aibu, the son of the senior wife, the night the call came from his father is now etched permanently on his soul.
“I was at home at night when my father called, asking me to rush to the family house because there was a fire,” he recounted, still visibly shaken. “But when we arrived, what we found was something else entirely.”
The junior wife was already engulfed in flames.
His mother, the senior wife, had locked herself inside the bathroom — a desperate attempt to escape the blaze. The family fought frantically to break down the door. When it finally gave way, their hope collapsed instantly.
She was gone.
Her room, too, had been set ablaze — the fire fed through the bathroom ventilation in what investigators now believe was a cunning and intentional act.
The Attackers Came Early. They Waited. They Watched.
The mystery deepened when CCTV footage from a neighbour was reviewed. It showed the attackers arriving around 12:30 pm, entering the house calmly and without resistance, and then remaining inside for hours — unseen, unheard, and unsuspected.
“No one knew they were inside until after the Maghrib prayer,” Anas explained.
Another child from the household returned home shortly after dusk but found the door locked from within. He knocked repeatedly. No response. He called his parents. No answer.
Only then did the family begin to sense danger.
By the time help arrived, the attackers had vanished — leaving flames, fuel, and death behind.
A House That Tells Its Own Story
At first, some believed the incident may have been an accident — a generator mishap or electrical spark. But a closer inspection shattered that illusion.
The main sitting room was untouched.
A jerrycan of petrol sat openly beside the wall.
The generator had been tampered with, and fuel was splashed deliberately across the rooms of the two wives. The junior wife’s mattress was soaked and burnt completely.
“One wife was burnt on a chair,” Anas noted quietly. “Everything in the junior wife’s room was deliberately set on fire.”
Police Intensify Manhunt
While the community trembles in fear and speculation runs wild, the Kano State Police Command insists it is closing in on leads. Investigators are tracking the recovered mobile phones, analysing the CCTV footage, and gathering testimonies from neighbours.
CSP Kiyawa assured the public that arrests are expected soon.
But in Tudun Yola, fear lingers like smoke. Parents hold their children closer. Neighbours whisper in low tones. And every night, doors are double-locked before dusk.
A Tragedy That Demands Answers
As the investigation deepens, residents of Tudun Yola — and Nigerians at large — wait anxiously for justice to catch up with the shadows that moved so freely that afternoon.
