The serenity of Pebble Street in New Orleans was shattered on the night of November 11, 2025, when what began as a quiet evening turned into a scene of horror for the Eweni family. A domestic incident spiraled out of control, leaving one man dead and two women critically injured — all within the same household.
Police reports indicate that officers of the New Orleans Police Department responded to emergency calls at about 9:59 p.m. Upon arrival, they found 58-year-old Prof. Samuel Eweni, a respected computer sciences lecturer at Southern University at New Orleans, lying unresponsive with a fatal stab wound.
Near him were his two daughters, both suffering from knife injuries. One has since been discharged from the hospital, while the other remains under medical care but is expected to recover.
In a shocking twist, authorities identified the attacker as 27-year-old Chukwuebuka Eweni, the late professor’s son. According to relatives who spoke to WWL Louisiana, Chukwuebuka had a history of mental illness but had never exhibited violent behavior. They described the tragedy as sudden, unexpected, and deeply painful.
Following the attack, Chukwuebuka fled the scene and was later located in Jefferson Parish, where he was taken into custody and placed under medical evaluation. The NOPD has confirmed an arrest warrant on one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder, noting that the suspect was considered armed and dangerous at the time of his apprehension.
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office is expected to release full autopsy details after notifying next of kin, though the family has already confirmed the death of Prof. Eweni.
The Nigerian community in the United States has been shaken by the tragedy. Prof. Eweni was widely described as a gentle academic, a father devoted to his children, and a man who made consistent contributions to education and community growth. His painful loss has opened conversations about mental health, trauma, and the hidden struggles families often navigate.
For residents of Pebble Street, the night will remain unforgettable — a heartbreaking reminder that tragedy can strike where it is least expected. As the surviving daughters recover, community groups are rallying around them, offering support and comfort during this difficult period.
