Delta State’s labour front witnessed a remarkable moment of stability and democratic strength as Comrade Wilson Asekutu emerged Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Delta State Council, following a peaceful and transparent election at the 1st Quadrennial Delegates’ Conference held in Asaba.
The highly attended conference, which took place at the Samuel Dietake Multipurpose Event Hall, reflected a rare sense of cohesion within organised labour. Comrade Asekutu was elected unopposed, a decision that resonated as a collective endorsement of his credibility, experience, and long-standing commitment to workers’ welfare. Delegates applauded the process as a glowing testimony of unity and maturity within the TUC family.
Representing the TUC President General, Comrade Festus Osifo, the Congress’s National Representative Comrade Oluchi-Favour Ubani praised the Delta State Council for delivering a seamless transition devoid of rancour or controversy. She noted that such harmony aligns strongly with the national vision for a stronger, more resilient and people-focused labour movement. She further prayed for the newly elected executive to enjoy a tenure marked by progress, stability, and impactful service to the hardworking men and women of Delta State.
In his acceptance speech, Comrade Asekutu expressed deep appreciation to the delegates for the confidence reposed in his leadership capacity. He pledged to build on the achievements of the outgoing administration, strengthen solidarity among affiliate unions, and intensify advocacy for the rights, welfare and dignity of workers across both public and private sectors.
According to him, his administration will prioritise addressing issues that have remained critical to Delta workers, including:
-
The rising cost of living
-
The growing challenge of casualisation
-
Job insecurity in key sectors
-
Advocacy for fair wages
-
Improved workplace safety and conducive working conditions
Comrade Asekutu, an accomplished labour leader from Tsekelewu in Egbema Kingdom, currently serves as the PENGASSAN Warri Zonal Secretary and is a member of both the PENGASSAN Central Working Committee and the National Executive Council. His extensive experience within the oil and gas sector places him in a strategic position to influence labour reforms and negotiate better welfare packages for workers.
Across Delta State, workers and labour stakeholders have expressed optimism, describing his emergence as a fresh opportunity to consolidate on existing gains and build a more robust, responsive front for labour advocacy.
As the new executive team prepares to commence its tenure, Delta workers look forward with high expectations, hoping for stronger representation and more impactful engagements with government and private employers.
Global Egberi Media International will continue to track developments within the TUC and provide timely updates as the new leadership charts the course for a renewed labour movement in Delta State.
