China Warns US President Donald Trump Against Military Interference in Nigeria

In what appears to be a major diplomatic signal, the Government of the People’s Republic of China has issued a strong warning to the United States President, Donald Trump, over his threat of military action in Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reaffirmed China’s “unwavering support” for the Nigerian government, declaring that Beijing firmly opposes any form of external interference under the guise of religion or human rights advocacy.
“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force,” Mao Ning said.
This reaction followed President Trump’s statement alleging that Christians in Nigeria were facing “systematic persecution” and that Washington might consider deploying military forces to protect religious minorities.
However, the Nigerian government quickly rejected Trump’s comments, emphasizing that such rhetoric undermines Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Nigeria Responds to Trump’s Military Threat
Daniel Bwala, a senior aide to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, responded on Russia National TV, dismissing Trump’s remarks as “a misguided and orchestrated media campaign” largely influenced by misinformation from separatist groups.
Bwala argued that independent monitors and civil society organizations had found no credible evidence of any state-backed religious genocide in Nigeria.
“We try our best to downplay the rhetoric because we know for sure that that can be the reflection of the realities on ground,” Bwala said, stressing that some American lawmakers had been misled by groups seeking to distort Nigeria’s image.
He further alleged that several U.S. congressmen, including Senator Ted Cruz, had been influenced by propaganda materials allegedly circulated by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
“The decision of President Trump is anchored on the various tweets and pushes by congressmen... The congressmen rely on data and reports submitted by a separatist group in Nigeria called IPOB, which falsely claimed that there is a genocide of Christians in Nigeria. None of the credible research bodies or NGOs confirmed such genocide,” he stated.
Bwala described the situation as part of a wider disinformation campaign that has been ongoing since 2016, orchestrated to “amplify religious tension” and influence U.S. foreign policy.
China’s Position: Respect Sovereignty and Partnership
China’s statement underscores its long-standing position on non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign nations, a principle that has guided its foreign policy especially in Africa.
Beijing maintains deep economic and infrastructural ties with Nigeria, particularly through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and continues to frame itself as a partner in development rather than a political interloper.
“We stand by Nigeria as it leads its people on the development path suited to its national conditions,” Mao Ning reiterated, urging all nations to respect Nigeria’s independence and internal processes.
Nigeria Calls for Collaboration, Not Intervention
While addressing the ongoing insecurity challenges, Bwala urged the U.S. to focus on supporting Nigeria through intelligence and military technology, rather than considering direct military deployment.
“We’re calling on Donald Trump to assist us with military apparatus that is requisite for us to fight insecurity. We do not need the boots of the American soldiers on our soil. There has to be respect for our territorial integrity,” he asserted.
Analysts believe that this diplomatic friction may mark a new turning point in Nigeria’s foreign relations, with China likely to strengthen its strategic alliance with Abuja amid growing geopolitical rivalry between Washington and Beijing in Africa.

The tension brewing between the United States and Nigeria, with China stepping in as a vocal defender of sovereignty, reveals much more than a passing diplomatic episode — it underscores a deep realignment in global power politics.
For decades, Africa has often been treated as a pawn in the chessboard of global superpowers. However, this new chapter signifies an era where African nations, Nigeria included, can assert their right to self-determination and partnership rather than subservience.
President Trump’s alleged consideration of military intervention under the pretext of protecting religious minorities is a dangerous precedent — one that undermines international law and Nigeria’s democratic sovereignty. While the protection of human rights remains a noble cause, such interventions, when not backed by verifiable evidence, only inflame instability and weaken legitimate governments.
China’s position, though strategic and self-serving in its own right, presents a contrasting doctrine — the principle of mutual respect, non-interference, and sovereign equality. Nigeria must leverage this global attention not merely as a spectator but as an active architect of her own narrative.
Our nation stands at a crossroads: between external manipulation and internal consolidation. The challenge for President Tinubu’s administration is to maintain transparency, protect all citizens regardless of faith or tribe, and ensure that propaganda — whether foreign or domestic — never hijacks our national discourse.
In the final analysis, Nigeria must engage with both East and West as a nation of dignity, guided by her constitution, history, and the collective aspirations of her people. The world must understand that Nigeria’s destiny lies not in the hands of Washington or Beijing, but in the will of Nigerians themselves.
