In what can only be described as a dramatic twist of political irony, the usually calm town of Bida in Niger State erupted in chaos on Sunday afternoon as angry youths unleashed fury on the convoy of Governor Umar Bago over a failed cash handout scheme that went terribly wrong.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the governor had earlier promised residents of Bida that he would personally visit and distribute cash gifts ahead of the forthcoming local government elections — a promise that stirred excitement and expectations across the community.
However, as soon as the money-sharing exercise began, it allegedly favored only a few selected individuals, leaving many disappointed and enraged. The crowd’s frustration quickly spiraled into violence, as stones, sticks, and sachet water became tools of protest.
“The governor promised that everyone would receive money, but only a few people got anything. That’s when the youths started shouting and attacking,” an eyewitness recounted.
The ensuing chaos saw over six vehicles in the governor’s convoy damaged, while Abubakar Mustapha, Chairman of the New Niger Development Project, sustained injuries and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Bida, for treatment.
The unrest didn’t stop there — enraged youths reportedly descended on APC and government billboards, vandalizing campaign materials and accusing the governor of deceit and political insincerity.
This latest incident comes just days after a stampede at an earlier cash-sharing event in Bida, which tragically claimed the life of a young girl and left several others injured. Critics have described the governor’s approach to these “empowerment distributions” as chaotic and poorly managed, while supporters insist the governor’s intentions were noble but hijacked by political opportunists.
For now, tension remains high in Bida as residents await an official response from the Niger State Government on what many now describe as “the cash chaos that stained the governor’s convoy.”
