During the visit, which had in attendance members of the Governing Council and the Honourable Commissioner for Technical Education, the Chairman also assured staff on temporary appointments that he would “try his best” to ensure their inclusion in the official payroll.
Yesterday, Thursday, October 23, 2025, the Delta State House of Assembly formally upheld the six-month suspension, adopting the report of its ad-hoc investigative committee.
The Assembly’s resolution cited alleged certificate racketeering, unauthorized expenditure, irregular staff recruitment, and breaches of procurement and administrative procedures as reasons for the disciplinary action. The DSHA also suspended the Bursar’s for six months—aligning it with that of the Rector—and directed the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education to oversee the Polytechnic’s activities within the period.
This legislative endorsement solidifies the Governing Council’s earlier actions and clears the path for the interim management appointments announced during the Council Chairman’s campus visit.
Highlights of the Council Chairman’s Visit
-
Hon. Paul Adingwupu led members of the Governing Council and the Commissioner for Technical Education to Ogwashi-Uku for an interactive meeting with senior academic and non-academic staff.
-
He formally announced the appointment of Dr. Chika Ogonwa as Acting Rector, and a new Acting Bursar to maintain institutional stability pending the conclusion of investigations.
-
The Council Chairman assured staff on temporary or ad-hoc engagement that efforts were being made to regularise their employment and include them on the official payroll.
-
The visit also featured renewed calls for cooperation among all staff to support the Council’s reform agenda and restore the Polytechnic’s reputation as a centre of technical excellence.
With Dr. Ogonwa and the new bursar at the helm, focus is expected to shift toward implementing the Assembly’s directives, completing the ongoing audit, and addressing payroll and welfare concerns raised by staff.
Stakeholders believe that this alignment between the Council and the State Assembly will help restore stability, accountability, and public confidence in the institution’s administration.
