In a decisive move aimed at strengthening accountability in Delta State’s tertiary education system, the Delta State House of Assembly has officially indicted the Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, Professor Emmanuel Achuenu, over alleged financial recklessness, misappropriation of funds, and gross administrative misconduct.

The Assembly’s action came after a detailed parliamentary probe into multiple allegations of financial and administrative irregularities within the institution. The investigation reportedly uncovered evidence suggesting that Prof. Achuenu had disregarded the authority of the Polytechnic’s Governing Council and acted in violation of the laws establishing the institution.

Following its findings, the House resolved to uphold the six-month suspension earlier slammed on the Rector by the Governing Council, affirming the council’s decision as lawful and necessary in protecting institutional integrity.

In addition, the Bursar of the Polytechnic was also handed a six-month suspension for similar infractions identified during the probe.

Lawmakers, while debating the report of the investigating committee, reiterated the need for transparency, accountability, and strict adherence to due process in the administration of public educational institutions. They emphasized that the Delta State Government remains committed to good governance and the efficient management of public resources—especially within the education sector.

The resolution, analysts say, signals the Assembly’s renewed commitment to ensuring that governing councils of tertiary institutions are empowered to enforce discipline and uphold ethical standards without political interference.

Educational Reform and Institutional Integrity

Observers have lauded the Delta State Assembly’s proactive stance as a step toward restoring public confidence in the management of the state’s tertiary institutions. The move also reinforces the principle that no official is above institutional regulations, regardless of their position or academic status.

Stakeholders in the education sector are calling for the implementation of stronger monitoring frameworks and periodic performance audits across all state-owned polytechnics to curb mismanagement and promote accountability.
