As the political atmosphere begins to heat up ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Ijaws of Egbema Kingdom, under Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, have respectfully but firmly raised their voices, demanding a fair and equitable share in the political representation of the local government.
For decades, the Itsekiri ethnic nationality has exclusively occupied the major political positions in Warri North — from the Delta State House of Assembly seat to the House of Representatives and even the Commissioner slot in successive administrations.
While the Ijaws of Egbema maintain cordial relations and mutual respect for their Itsekiri brothers, they insist that the time has come for true equity, justice, and inclusion to prevail.
A Polite but Firm Political Appeal for Equity
In a well-articulated and peaceful statement, community leaders, political stakeholders, and youth voices from Egbema Kingdom emphasized that their call is not a declaration of rivalry or conflict, but a polite political appeal grounded in fairness, unity, and the democratic principle of inclusion.
“We are not asking for what we haven’t earned. We are asking for what is just, what is due, and what is right,” one of the community leaders stated, echoing the collective sentiment of the Ijaw populace.
According to the group, since the creation of Warri North Local Government, the Ijaw people — despite being equal stakeholders and co-owners of the LGA — have never been given the opportunity to serve in these key political positions.
They lamented that such continued exclusion not only undermines fairness but also contradicts the inclusive spirit that should define Delta’s political landscape.
Ijaws Have Been Loyal, Peaceful, and Supportive
The Ijaw people of Egbema have consistently proven themselves as peaceful, loyal, and supportive citizens. Over the years, they have voted in unity, supported candidates from other ethnic groups, and contributed meaningfully to the growth and development of Warri North.
Despite this unwavering show of cooperation, the political structure has remained one-sided. Yet, the Ijaws continue to uphold peace, even in the face of marginalization — a mark of their maturity and faith in the democratic process.
The leaders noted that continuous exclusion breeds political bitterness, and warned that any democracy that does not reflect inclusion ultimately weakens its moral foundation.
2027: The Call for Balanced Representation
As the 2027 elections draw near, the Egbema Ijaws are politely but resolutely appealing to political parties, traditional rulers, government functionaries, and opinion leaders to do the right thing — to allow an Ijaw son or daughter to occupy key leadership positions in Warri North.
Specifically, they are calling for:

An Ijaw representative for the Delta State House of Assembly seat;

The Ijaws to be considered for the House of Representatives slot; and

The next Commissioner representing Warri North to come from the Ijaw extraction.
This, they said, will not only heal the historical imbalance but also promote a sense of belonging and partnership between the Ijaws and the Itsekiris — the two major ethnic groups cohabiting the local government.
A Call to Leadership and Conscience
The Ijaw people of Egbema Kingdom have reaffirmed their belief in Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s vision of “More Agenda” — anchored on fairness, inclusivity, and development. They are confident that the governor, known for his even-handedness and passion for peace, will heed this polite call for justice.
As one youth leader aptly put it:
“We are not fighting anyone. We are simply reminding the system that Warri North belongs to both the Ijaws and the Itsekiris. Fairness demands that we all have a chance to serve.”
The message is clear: Let fairness speak. Let justice prevail. Let unity be real.
The Ijaws of Egbema have leaders of integrity, capacity, and experience who are ready to serve. The 2027 elections present an opportunity for Delta’s democracy to once again stand tall — on the firm pillars of equity, justice, and true representation.
