TRAGEDY IN THE NIGER DELTA: YOUNG IJAW SCHOOLGIRL ENDS HER LIFE OVER LOVE DRAMA
TRAGEDY IN THE NIGER DELTA: YOUNG IJAW SCHOOLGIRL ENDS HER LIFE OVER LOVE DRAMA
In the quiet riverine community of Okoroma-Ama, an Ijaw town blessed with mangroves and fishing waters, tragedy struck in a way that still sends cold shivers down the spine of many.
Miss Ebiyai Fubara, a beautiful 17-year-old secondary school girl in boarding house, had her future carefully nurtured by her father, Chief Pereowei Fubara, a respected fisherman and community leader known for his discipline and love for education. Like every caring father, he had invested all his strength to see his daughter rise above the struggles of the Niger Delta and become a shining light.
But fate took a different path. One fateful day, Ebiyai signed an excuse at school claiming she was going home. Instead of returning to her family house at Ayama-Biri, she diverted to the home of her secret boyfriend, a young man named Ebiowei Douwei.
At that very moment, Chief Pereowei visited the school unannounced to check on his daughter. To his greatest surprise, the school authorities informed him that his daughter had taken permission to go home. His heart skipped — for he knew that Ebiyai was not at home. Anxiety turned into anger as he began asking questions. With the help of concerned neighbors and relatives, he eventually traced his daughter to Ebiowei’s house.
Furious and disappointed, Chief Pereowei had the young man arrested, hoping the bitter experience would serve as correction both to his daughter and her lover. But in a painful twist, young Ebiyai could not understand her father’s deep love and the sacrifices behind his strictness. Overwhelmed by shame and anger, she drank poison.
Within moments, her promising life was cut short. Cries of sorrow filled Okoroma-Ama. The once-proud Chief Pereowei, who only sought the best for his daughter, broke down in tears. The community mourned, the school was thrown into confusion, and mothers held their children close in fear of such tragedy repeating itself.
A Father’s Pain, A Community’s Lesson
The death of Ebiyai reminds every Ijaw household that discipline without communication can be misunderstood, and that youthful stubbornness often leads to destruction. Chief Pereowei’s attempt to secure his daughter’s future was met with rebellion, and the price was death.
Moral Lesson
The story of Ebiyai Fubara teaches us that no relationship, shame, or anger is worth a human life. To the youths: correction from parents is not wickedness but love. To the parents: strictness must be balanced with patient dialogue. And to the community: life is precious, fragile, and must be guarded jealously.
May the Almighty console Chief Pereowei Fubara and grant wisdom to his surviving children so that his heart will never be broken again.
