Popular Anti-EndSARS Critic, Buhun Barkonun, Dies in Abuja Hotel During Alleged Sex Romp

Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is in shock following the sudden death of Yunusa Ahmadu Yusuf, popularly known as Buhun Barkonun, a strong critic of the 2020 #EndSARS protests and Senior Special Assistant on Community Development to the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Zakka Maikalangu.

According to multiple reports, Yusuf, 47, passed away after allegedly collapsing in a hotel in the Karu-Jikwoyi axis of Abuja during a stay with a woman identified simply as Ruth.

The Circumstances Leading to His Death

Sources disclosed that Yusuf checked into the hotel on Tuesday, September 8, 2025, and stayed for several days. Though he reportedly declined meals, he consumed large amounts of alcohol. On the morning of his death, Ruth allegedly purchased an energy drink for him after observing his deteriorating condition. Shortly after taking the drink, Yusuf collapsed into a coma.

Hotel staff and Ruth rushed him to a nearby hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Police authorities have opened an investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding his sudden death.

Yusuf’s Role as an Anti-EndSARS Voice

Buhun Barkonun rose to prominence in October 2020 during the #EndSARS protests, which called for the disbandment of the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) over alleged human rights abuses.

In a letter addressed to then-Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, Yusuf urged demonstrators to vacate major roads in Abuja, citing disruption of economic and social activities. He warned that the Indigenous people of the FCT were losing patience and could take matters into their own hands if protests continued.

Yusuf, who often used social media to share his views, claimed the protests had been hijacked by political opportunists and criminal elements. In a Facebook post dated October 22, 2020, he wrote:

“#IStandWithMyOpinion the #EndSARS protest have been hijacked and it’s now invoking security situation and we cannot destroy the peace and unity in FCT because we don’t have anywhere else to go. If you want to invoke security tension we will not support.”

He further issued a 48-hour ultimatum for protesters to vacate the roads — an action that stirred controversy at the time.

AMAC Chairman Mourns

Reacting to the news, AMAC Chairman Christopher Zakka Maikalangu expressed deep sorrow over the passing of his aide. In a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Kingsley Madaki, Maikalangu described Yusuf as a “dedicated public servant and a vital bridge builder whose contributions to community development were invaluable.”

He extended heartfelt condolences to Yusuf’s family, associates, and the entire FCT community.

Burial Arrangements

A wake has been scheduled for Monday, September 15, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at ECWA Church, Kpaduma 1. The funeral service will follow on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at the same venue.

Public Reaction

Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the news. While some expressed sympathy, others were critical of the circumstances surrounding his death. Social commentator Bro Nathanael Chima wrote:

“He has finally left the FCT in a very shameful way. He went to show power with a woman, while real men are showing off their power in meaningful areas.”

The shocking incident continues to trend online, sparking renewed debates about morality, public service integrity, and the private lives of public figures.
