Lagos, Nigeria — In a colorful, history-making event at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos, Nigerian celebrity chef Hilda ‘Baci’ Bassey has officially completed her attempt to cook the world’s largest pot of Jollof rice, an ambitious culinary feat that has captured global attention.
For eight intense hours, Hilda and her team of ten assistants stirred a six-metre-wide steel cauldron filled with over five tonnes of rice, tomato concentrate, cooking oil, and onions. The attempt, tagged “Gino World Jollof Festival With Hilda Baci”, drew a registered audience of 20,000 food lovers, fans, and celebrities.
🔥 The Cooking Marathon
Hilda poured 4,000kg of basmati rice, 500 cartons of tomato concentrate, 750kg of oil, and 600kg of onions into the giant pot, reducing the initial plan from 250 bags of rice to 200 to keep within the 20,000kg weight limit. The giant pot itself had to be weighed carefully using a crane, leading to a dramatic moment when the pot’s cover slipped and its legs bent slightly, prompting gasps from the crowd.
Despite the tense weigh-in, the food was successfully packed into coolers by dawn and shared with the eager audience.
👏 Massive Support & Star-Studded Event
Hilda’s attempt turned into a cultural festival, with DJs, musicians, and comedians keeping the crowd entertained through the night. Notable figures in attendance included Ogun State First Lady Bamidele Abiodun, Nollywood superstar Funke Akindele, media personality Tomike Adeoye, and fashion designer Veekee James. Funke praised Hilda’s resilience and urged young women to be ambitious, telling the audience: “You can look beautiful, but you must hustle and do something special for yourself.”
Hilda, visibly emotional, broke down in tears at one point after reading the massive outpouring of support online.
🌍 Celebrating West African Culture
Jollof rice is one of West Africa’s most loved dishes, with each country adding its unique twist. The event sparked friendly banter over the Nigeria vs. Ghana Jollof rivalry. Historians trace the dish back to the 14th-century Wolof Empire (now Senegal, Mauritania, and Gambia), where it spread as thiebou dieune.
🏆 Guinness World Records Awaits Verification
Guinness World Records acknowledged Hilda’s attempt, posting a goodwill message online. The official confirmation will come after photos, videos, and weight records are reviewed. But for Hilda, this was more than a record attempt — it was about celebrating Nigerian culture and feeding the nation.
“When I came up with this idea, I didn’t think of it as just a world record attempt. I wanted to unite people, showcase our culture, and inspire others,” she said.
This is Hilda’s second Guinness attempt after she set the record for the longest cooking marathon (93 hours, 11 minutes) in May 2023. Born in Akwa Ibom in 1995, the sociology graduate has built a global culinary brand inspired by her mother, also a chef.
