El-Rufai: ADC Accuses FG Of Deploying Security Agencies To Silence Opposition

The political atmosphere in Nigeria has once again been thrown into heated tension as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) raises strong allegations against the Federal Government, accusing it of weaponizing security agencies to suppress opposition voices.

At the center of this unfolding drama is the former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, alongside other leaders of the ADC in the North-West. According to reports, the Nigeria Police authorities in Kaduna recently extended invitations to El-Rufai and some senior party figures over alleged public disturbance, a move that the ADC insists is more politically motivated than legally justified.

A Storm of Accusations

In a statement issued on Friday, Bolaji Abdullahi, the spokesman of the ADC, condemned the police summons and linked it to a broader strategy to weaken the rising influence of the ADC across northern Nigeria. He described the development as “a coordinated attempt to silence dissent and intimidate those who challenge the status quo.”

The ADC particularly pointed to the recent attack on the convoy of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, as well as violent disruptions of the party’s stakeholders’ meeting in Kaduna. According to Abdullahi, the failure of security agencies to arrest or prosecute the perpetrators of such politically charged violence is proof of bias and selective justice.

“The Federal Government and the Inspector General of Police must immediately withdraw these politically motivated summons. These invitations are not about justice or security; they are simply about silencing dissent,” the statement declared.

Demands for Transparency

The ADC did not stop at condemnation. It also demanded that the police make public the identities of those who filed the petitions that triggered the summons against El-Rufai and other party leaders.

“The public deserves to know who is behind these attacks on political freedom, and what interests they serve,” the party insisted, stressing that the credibility of security agencies is on trial when they appear to be tools in the hands of politicians.

A Call for True Security Priorities

In its strongly worded statement, the ADC urged the Federal Government to redirect the focus of the police toward their constitutional duties—protecting the lives and property of Nigerians—rather than being used as an instrument of political manipulation.

“The Nigeria Police Force must not be reduced to an extension of political power. Their duty is to defend the people, not to silence opposition,” Abdullahi said.

The ADC further reaffirmed its solidarity with El-Rufai and other embattled leaders, vowing that the party “will not be intimidated” and would continue to mobilize citizens for stronger democratic engagement across the nation.

Wider Political Implications

This fresh controversy comes at a time when Nigeria’s democracy is facing growing criticism, with opposition parties frequently accusing the ruling establishment of using state institutions to crush dissent. The ADC, once considered a fringe party, has recently gained traction in key northern states, positioning itself as a genuine alternative to the more established political blocs.

Observers note that if these allegations are not properly addressed, Nigeria could witness a dangerous erosion of public trust in its democratic institutions, further deepening political divisions in an already fragile nation.
