Delta Govt Inaugurates Peace Committee to End Ethnic Hostilities in Warri

The Delta State Government has taken a decisive step toward restoring peace in Warri and its environs, following weeks of heightened tension and inter-ethnic hostilities.

In a bold move aimed at preventing the crisis from escalating further, the state government inaugurated a Peace Committee on Friday at the Government House Annex, Warri. The inauguration was presided over by the Director-General of Security, Hon. David Tonwe, who stressed that the move was in direct response to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to ensuring that Warri returns to its place as a hub of peaceful coexistence and economic growth.

Mandate of the Peace Committee

Hon. Tonwe outlined the committee’s terms of reference, urging the members to actively engage their respective ethnic nationalities — Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Urhobo — in genuine dialogue that would foster unity.

“The problem before us is one of ethnic identity. It is your duty to ensure that the recent outbreak of hostilities becomes a thing of the past. Warri must move from conflict to peace and development,” Tonwe charged.

He further warned against provocative actions, inflammatory social media posts, and unguided statements that could fan the embers of division, emphasizing that sustainable development cannot take place in a climate of rancor and disunity.

Stakeholders Pledge Commitment

Chairman of the Delta State Waterways and Land Security Committee, Chief Boro Pudu, pledged that no effort would be spared to restore harmony in the troubled city.

Similarly, the Chairmen of Warri South and Warri South West Local Government Councils, Comrade Isaac Agbateyiniro and Hon. Sylvester Oromoni, commended Governor Oborevwori for his swift intervention. They described the peace initiative as timely and crucial in forestalling a major outbreak of violence that could disrupt economic and social life in Warri.

“This is a welcome development. The governor’s action will help avert what could have snowballed into a larger crisis,” Agbateyiniro said, while Oromoni reaffirmed his administration’s full support for the committee’s work.

Ethnic Representatives Call for Unity

In a rare show of unity, representatives of the three major ethnic nationalities — Chief Sylvester Okumagba (Urhobo), Hon. Orueboh Oritsetimeyin (Itsekiri), and Hon. Denbo-Denbofa Oweikpodor (Ijaw) — pledged to work closely with the government, local authorities, and traditional institutions to bring about lasting peace.

They jointly appealed to individuals and groups still fueling tension to desist from further provocative actions and embrace dialogue and reconciliation for the collective good of Warri and Delta State.

A Path to Peace and Development

The committee’s inauguration marks a significant milestone in Delta State’s renewed effort to transform Warri into a beacon of peaceful coexistence and economic prosperity. Analysts believe that if properly implemented, the peace plan could not only end the recurring ethnic clashes but also unlock the economic potential of the region, which is a critical hub for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

With this move, Governor Oborevwori’s administration appears determined to ensure that Warri once again becomes a city known not for crisis, but for its contributions to commerce, industry, and culture in Nigeria.
