Nigeria has once again been thrown into mourning as armed gunmen launched deadly attacks on security operatives in two separate incidents, leaving at least five police officers dead and sparking fresh concerns over the rising wave of insecurity across the country.

🚨 Attack in Kogi State

In the early hours of Wednesday, tragedy struck in Egbe community, Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on policemen stationed at a checkpoint along the border between Kogi and Kwara States.

The assailants, who reportedly stormed the checkpoint in a surprise raid, gunned down three police officers on duty, leaving the area in shock and fear.

Confirming the attack, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP William Aya, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, has swiftly deployed operatives from the tactical team to comb the area and ensure the perpetrators are arrested.

“I can confirm to you that three of our officers on duty were killed today in Egbe, a border community with Kwara State. The Commissioner of Police has deployed a tactical squad to the area. We are currently on the trail of the gunmen; they will all be arrested,” Aya stated.

🔥 Another Deadly Attack in Rivers-Abia Boundary

Shockingly, the incident in Kogi mirrors a similar bloody attack that occurred just last Thursday at the Obehie boundary between Rivers and Abia States.

According to a police situation report, over 20 heavily armed men, suspected to be militants, staged a coordinated ambush on operatives of the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) stationed at a sandbag checkpoint.

The attackers, who arrived in three SUVs concealed behind long trucks, unleashed a hail of bullets with sophisticated weapons, killing two officers identified as Inspector Ishaya Audu and Inspector Anthony Emmanuel.

Despite resistance from the officers, who engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle, the militants reportedly overpowered them, carted away their rifles, and fled with vehicles riddled with bullets.

The remains of the slain officers have since been deposited at the Euro Allied Mortuary, Port Harcourt Road, Aba, as authorities continue efforts to apprehend those responsible.

These twin tragedies highlight the escalating level of insecurity across Nigeria, particularly the increasing boldness of armed groups in launching coordinated attacks on security operatives.

Security experts have warned that the unchecked proliferation of sophisticated weapons in the hands of criminal elements poses a grave threat not only to law enforcement agencies but also to the peace and stability of communities across the federation.

Both the Kogi and Abia State Police Commands have assured Nigerians that tactical teams are on the ground to reinforce security, recover stolen arms, and bring the culprits to justice.
