Nigeria has once again been thrown into mourning as Boko Haram insurgents staged a deadly attack on Daral-Jamal, a community along the Bama–Banki Road in Sambisa Forest, Borno State. The carnage left five soldiers and 58 civilians dead, while survivors watched in horror as the insurgents burned over 20 houses, vehicles, foodstuffs, and valuables belonging to resettled Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

In his reaction, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the assault, describing it as nothing short of “senseless violence”. The 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate expressed deep grief over the killings, declaring:

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic killing of scores of people, including gallant soldiers, in the recent Boko Haram attack on Darajamal, Borno State. This senseless violence is a painful reminder of the heavy price our people continue to pay in the face of terror.”

Atiku extended his condolences to the bereaved families, the resilient people of Borno, and Governor Babagana Zulum, whose swift visit to the devastated community was praised as an act of compassion. He prayed for the departed souls, asking Almighty Allah to grant them Al-Jannah Firdaus and to comfort their grieving families.

Calling for urgent action, Atiku stressed that Nigeria must confront terrorism with “unity and renewed resolve”. He noted that the sacrifices of fallen soldiers and innocent civilians should inspire stronger security strategies, deeper community collaboration, and unwavering commitment to lasting peace.

Governor Zulum, who was visibly shaken as he consoled survivors during his Saturday visit, condemned the brutality and pledged that government will not abandon the people of Daral-Jamal in their time of pain.

The United Nations (UN) also added its voice of condemnation. UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, urged Nigerian authorities to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators while commiserating with the families of the victims.

The massacre has renewed debate about the nation’s fight against insurgency, sparking calls for a more decisive approach to secure vulnerable communities in the North-East. For the people of Daral-Jamal, whose lives have been shattered, the road to healing remains long, but their spirit of resilience shines amid the tragedy.
