IYC Worldwide President, Ethnic Leaders Shut Down NNPC Headquarters in Abuja, Demand Sack of CEO Bashir Bayo Ojulari

The 9th President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri Snr, who also serves as the Chairman of the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Forum, on Wednesday led a massive coalition of ethnic nationality leaders in a bold demonstration that effectively shut down the Headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The protest, which drew a strong crowd of Niger Delta activists, traditional representatives, and youth leaders, was staged to demand the immediate sack of the NNPC CEO, Mr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, whom the protesters accused of deliberate marginalization and unfair treatment against the Ijaw people and other ethnic groups in the oil-producing Niger Delta region.
Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri insisted that the Ijaw people who were unlawfully sacked from NNPC operations must be reinstated without further delay, warning that continued silence would be met with “stronger resistance from the people of the Niger Delta.”
Demands Beyond NNPC Headquarters
The protest did not only focus on NNPC leadership. Lokpobiri further raised critical concerns about the abandoned Port Harcourt Refinery, where trillions of naira have allegedly been spent with nothing to show for it.
He also pressed hard on the Nigerian Maritime University, Oron, among other neglected projects and institutions across the region, stressing that the time has come for the Federal Government to respect the Niger Delta and deliver on its promises.
Wider Support From Youth Movements
The IYC Western Zone President, Comr. Nicholas Igarama, alongside other youth bodies, lent their voices to the protest, declaring solidarity with the demands of Lokpobiri and the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Forum. They maintained that the ongoing injustices and neglect of oil-rich communities can no longer be tolerated.
According to Igarama, “This struggle is not just about Ijaw people alone, it is about the survival and dignity of all Niger Delta ethnic groups. We will not fold our hands while our people suffer and our resources are squandered.”
Strong Warning to FG
The coalition issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, declaring that failure to act swiftly could trigger wider mass actions across oil-producing states, including shutting down of strategic national assets until their demands are met.
Lokpobiri concluded that the Niger Delta people are not beggars but rightful stakeholders in Nigeria’s oil economy, and would continue to fight for equity, justice, and fairness.
