Ondo Sanitation Monitoring: Dr. Tob Loko Leads Enforcement, Says Environmental Compliance Is Not Optional

Despite the early morning drizzle, the Ondo State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Tob Loko, took to the streets of Akure with senior officials to lead the enforcement phase of the July edition of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise. The event, which took place across strategic points in the Akure metropolis, reflected the Aiyedatiwa-led administration’s zero-tolerance policy for environmental law violations.
From Awareness to Action: Enforcement Kicks In
Unlike previous editions that focused more on sensitization and inspection, this month's sanitation exercise witnessed a shift in gear toward enforcement. Starting from Adegbemile and proceeding through NEPA Roundabout, Odojoka at Old Garage, and Cathedral Roundabout, Dr. Loko and his team monitored real-time compliance levels and took note of non-compliant individuals and groups.
Accompanied by officials from the Ondo State Waste Management Authority and the Ministry of Environment, Dr. Loko reiterated that the monitoring exercise was a direct instruction from His Excellency, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as part of the E.A.S.E. Agenda’s drive to ensure environmental accountability across the state.
“We are here today not just to monitor but to enforce. The Governor has given clear instructions that our environmental laws must be upheld,” Dr. Loko declared. “We carried out massive awareness campaigns across various platforms, and today is the day of action.”
Hope for Culture Shift Through Consistent Enforcement
Dr. Loko expressed hope that sustained enforcement over the next few months will organically drive compliance. “The laws have always been there,” he said, “but enforcement has been the weak link. If we can maintain this momentum for the next two to three months, we’ll witness voluntary compliance.”
A United Front Across Communities
At the Odojoka axis, particularly within the Hausa community, Dr. Loko was joined by Mr. Omoyofunmi Segun (Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development) and Mrs. Yinka Alabi (Chairman, Waste Management Authority). They urged community members to align with state policies, emphasizing unity across ethnic lines—Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba—and the importance of a clean and healthy lifestyle.
NURTW Briefing: Cleanliness and Peace as Catalysts for Development
At the NURTW office in Cathedral, commercial drivers were directly engaged. The delegation emphasized that meaningful development cannot thrive without cleanliness, peace, and respect for the rule of law. Drivers were reminded that every citizen has a part to play in building a livable Ondo State.

Dr. Loko concluded the exercise by reaffirming the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to restoring Ondo State—especially Akure—to its former glory as one of Nigeria’s cleanest cities.
“We are committed to restoring Akure and the entire state to its rightful status as one of the cleanest in the federation.”
