ZAPORIZHZHIA REGION, UKRAINE – A Nigerian man, Kehinde Oluwagbemileke, 29, who had reportedly been fighting on the side of the Russian military in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, has been captured by Ukrainian forces. His apprehension marks a controversial chapter in the tragic realities of foreign nationals being swept into global conflicts.

According to Ukraine’s “I Want to Live” project, Oluwagbemileke was captured by the Freedom of Russia Legion, a Ukrainian-aligned unit composed of Russian nationals opposing the Kremlin's war agenda. The capture occurred in the embattled Zaporizhzhia region in southeastern Ukraine, where fierce battles continue between both armies.

Sources revealed that Kehinde had been residing in Russia for the past four years. During his stay, he was reportedly arrested on drug-related charges. In a desperate bid to escape jail time or earn his freedom, he allegedly accepted a deal to enlist and fight for Russian forces.

He had served on the Russian frontline for over five months before falling into the hands of Ukrainian fighters. The “I Want to Live” project, which documents prisoner surrenders and war crimes, confirmed that Oluwagbemileke is now in custody and will be processed in accordance with international humanitarian protocols.

This case has sparked a mixture of shock and concern among Nigerians at home and abroad. While the idea of a Nigerian citizen participating in an international conflict not involving his home country may seem far-fetched, the reality paints a picture of vulnerability, desperation, and exploitation of migrants within foreign systems.
