FG Rolls Out ₦10 Million Support Scheme for Lecturers, Non-Academic Staff in Tertiary Institutions

In a landmark move aimed at uplifting the welfare and economic empowerment of academic and non-academic personnel in Nigeria’s higher education system, the Federal Government has launched a new initiative known as the Tertiary Institution Staff Support Fund (TISSF).

This announcement was made on Sunday in Abuja through a press statement issued by Mrs. Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.

The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, while unveiling the programme, described it as a “welfare-focused loan scheme” designed to not only improve financial stability but also support the personal growth and career development of staff in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country.

Loan Access and Eligibility

Under the scheme, qualified tertiary institution workers will have access to loans of up to ₦10 million, depending on individual eligibility. The disbursed amount, however, must not exceed 33.3% of the applicant’s gross annual salary, ensuring responsible borrowing and repayment flexibility.

The loan is not just for emergencies or basic needs. According to the minister, staff can use it for diverse needs such as transportation, medical expenses, and micro-enterprise projects like poultry farming. This multifaceted approach aims to promote entrepreneurship and sustainable income streams among Nigeria’s educational workforce.

Transparent Disbursement Mechanism

To ensure accountability, the scheme will be managed in collaboration with the Bank of Industry (BOI), which will handle the technical and financial oversight of loan disbursements. Dr. Alausa emphasized that the ministry is committed to full transparency and fiscal responsibility in the execution of the TISSF programme.

A Vision Beyond Welfare

Dr. Alausa further stated that the initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s broader education reform agenda and is designed to reposition the sector by placing value on those who serve within it.

“TISSF is not just about welfare. It is about empowerment. We are ensuring that our education workforce is supported to live well, grow professionally, and continue contributing meaningfully to institutional excellence,” — Dr. Alausa.

This support fund signals a significant shift in the federal government’s commitment to reward and invest in its education personnel, a sector often riddled with strikes and underfunding.

As implementation kicks off, stakeholders across the education landscape are optimistic that this initiative will reduce pressure on salaries, promote financial discipline, and ultimately inspire higher productivity and morale among Nigeria’s tertiary institution staff.
