Bayelsa’s capital city, Yenagoa, came alive yesterday morning as the air vibrated with energy, unity, and purpose. Leading from the front was none other than the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, who took charge of the Thursday Prosperity Walk — a tradition now deeply woven into the state's governance and wellness culture.

But this was not just another walk.

Today’s march carried deeper meaning and national resonance as it coincided with the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. In a bold display of leadership and symbolism, Governor Diri was joined by the Bayelsa State Drug Abuse Prevention and Rehabilitation Committee, whose participation underscored a renewed state-level commitment to battling the menace of drugs among young people.

Addressing the crowd at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex after the walk, the Governor spoke passionately:

“Today is acclaimed worldwide as International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. As a government, not only are we marking it — we are leading the campaign here. I like to once again call on our youth to shun drugs.”

This call was not just rhetorical. It was a pointed appeal aimed at saving Bayelsa’s next generation from the grip of addiction and destruction. Governor Diri’s tone was firm yet fatherly — like a shepherd determined to protect his flock from wolves in sheep’s clothing.

The day’s walk also carried a moment of celebration as Governor Diri warmly received one of Bayelsa’s rising stars in global athletics — Victory Godah, a US-based sprinter from Ekeremor Local Government Area, currently blazing the tracks at Minnesota State University.

Victory, who is currently on holiday in Nigeria, graced the walk and gifted Governor Diri a special Minnesota-branded T-shirt. Even more impressively, the young sprinter has donated several sporting kits to inspire and equip young Bayelsan athletes — a gesture that blends both patriotism and philanthropy.

In his response, Governor Diri commended Victory Godah for using his platform not just for personal glory, but as a vehicle to elevate others.

“You are not just running for yourself. You’re running for Bayelsa. You’re running for Nigeria. And above all, you are running for hope,” the Governor enthused.

Today, Yenagoa didn't just walk for fitness — it walked for prosperity, awareness, and inspiration.
