Fulani-Abraka Youth Clash Leaves Community in Turmoil: DPO Attacked Amid Rising Tension

A major security crisis erupted in Abraka, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, following a violent clash between Fulani herdsmen and local youths in the early hours of Friday, June 6, 2025.
Eyewitness Account: Mr. Oghenetega Okoh, a youth leader, described the morning as “one of the darkest days Abraka has seen.” According to him, repeated reports of kidnappings allegedly perpetrated by individuals believed to be Fulani herdsmen pushed the community to its limits.
“For weeks now, we've been reporting strange movements around Erho-Abraka bush. Farmers can't go to the farm. Women are being kidnapped. Today was just the tipping point.”
Around 7:00 a.m., Abraka youths confronted herdsmen near the university farm axis. The confrontation turned violent as objects were thrown and threats exchanged. The Divisional Police Officer, SP Fabian Ayameh, was reportedly attacked while attempting to restore order.
“The DPO came out to calm us, but people are angry. He was hit and had to be protected by his men,” said Mr. Emmanuel Ovie, a university lecturer.
Shops were shut down and women joined the protest around 10:00 a.m., holding placards reading "End Kidnapping in Abraka" and "DPO Must Go".
Police and Government Response
The Delta State Police Command confirmed the unrest and attack on SP Ayameh. More officers have been deployed, and investigations are ongoing. Authorities urge calm while promising improved security.
But youths remain defiant. Mr. Edafe Lucky, a community rep, told Global Egberi Media International:
“We’re not against anyone, but we won’t stay silent while our people are being kidnapped.”
Looking Ahead
As night falls, tension lingers around Ekrejeta Road and other hotspots. Community elders are calling a town hall meeting to broker peace and prevent further escalation. Abraka, a town once known for peace, stands at a crossroads.
