Delta State Deepens War Against Substance Abuse

Gov. Oborevwori Leads Aggressive Campaign to Safeguard Youths and Rehabilitate Drug Victims

In a bold and strategic move to rid Delta State of the scourge of drug abuse and its far-reaching consequences, the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is leading an unprecedented war on substance abuse through multi-sectoral collaborations and robust investment in youth rehabilitation and empowerment initiatives.

This assurance was given by the Director General, Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, during his appearance on the public affairs programme "Orientation Panorama" aired on Voice of Delta Radio, Asaba, in commemoration of the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

📉 Drug Abuse Rate Drops Under Oborevwori’s Watch

According to Dr. Oghenesivbe, Delta State’s drug abuse prevalence rate among individuals aged 15–64 stood at 18% in 2023, with over half a million individuals affected. However, through the proactive efforts of Governor Oborevwori’s government, this number has seen a significant decline.

The ongoing success is largely credited to the statewide “Drug Free Delta” campaign in collaboration with the Delta State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), a campaign that is about to enter its critical second phase.

🏫 Campaign Targets Schools and Tertiary Institutions

Dr. Oghenesivbe announced that the next phase of the campaign will target 58 selected secondary schools, all state-owned universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across Delta's three senatorial zones.

“This is a strategic move to reach the youth where they are most vulnerable and empower them with the right information and support systems,” he said.

🚨 Drugs and Crime: A Deadly Link

In a startling revelation, the Bureau Chief asserted that over 95% of criminal activities globally—including armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, cybercrime (Yahoo Yahoo), domestic violence, and sexual abuse—are linked to the use of hard drugs and substance abuse.

He noted that Governor Oborevwori recently convened a high-level security meeting with lawmakers, traditional rulers, local government chairmen, and security chiefs where he emphasized the urgency of eradicating drug-related crimes from Delta State.

🏥 Rehabilitation, Empowerment & Reintegration

To holistically address drug addiction and its after-effects, the state government is investing heavily in infrastructure. Two rehabilitation centres—a mega centre in Kwale and a medium-sized facility in Agbor—are nearing completion. These centres will provide not just counselling, but also vocational training and post-rehab empowerment.

“Upon admission, both male and female drug victims will receive intensive care, vocational training, and starter packs to help them rebuild their lives and re-enter society with dignity,” Dr. Oghenesivbe affirmed.

🚓 Security and Equipment Boost

The administration is also actively strengthening the operational capacity of law enforcement agencies. The Delta NDLEA Command and other security outfits recently received operational vehicles and surveillance gadgets to track and prosecute drug traffickers across the state.

This has resulted in several successful operations, arrests, and court convictions that are gradually choking off illicit drug networks within the region.

Dr. Oghenesivbe lauded the governor’s commitment to the MORE Agenda, especially as it relates to youth development, women empowerment, social security for the vulnerable, and free healthcare delivery for widows and senior citizens.

“Delta is not only building a drug-free future—it is also setting the pace nationally in youth-centred policy implementation and social inclusion,” he added.
