Former Bayelsa Military Administrator, Navy Captain Omoniyi Olubolade (Rtd), Dies at 70

Former Military Administrator of Bayelsa State and retired naval officer, Navy Captain Omoniyi Caleb Olubolade (Rtd), has passed away at the age of 70.

The distinguished naval officer and former federal minister, who celebrated his 70th birthday on November 30, 2024, died on Sunday, May 11, in Apapa, Lagos.

In a joint statement signed by his first daughter, Oluwayemisi Akinadewo, and first son, Dayo Olubolade, the family announced that the retired officer collapsed suddenly while playing lawn tennis.

“He drove himself to the facility to play lawn tennis in the evening and slumped while playing,” the statement read. “Efforts were made by medical officers around to revive him to no avail. He was immediately rushed to Obisesan Naval Medical Hospital, Apapa, where he was pronounced dead.”

Navy Captain Olubolade served the nation in several high-profile roles, including as Minister of Special Duties, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Minister of Police Affairs. He was appointed Military Administrator of Bayelsa State during the transitional military regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar in 1997 and served until 1998.

His death marks the end of a notable career in public service, spanning military leadership, political appointments, and community engagement. Tributes are already pouring in from across the country in recognition of his service and dedication to Nigeria.
